Dresden splits neatly in two: the rebuilt baroque Old Town on the south bank of the Elbe, and the Neustadt across the river, with its quieter Barockviertel and its lively bar quarter. These boutique hotels in Dresden suit city breakers, opera and gallery lovers, and anyone stopping between Berlin and Prague who wants a hotel with some history or personality.
Boutique Hotels in Dresden
Every hotel here is rated 9 or higher by Booking.com guests, has real character (a reconstructed baroque townhouse, an 18th-century merchantsโ hall, a small riverside hotel) and is an easy walk or short tram ride from the Frauenkirche. We read the reviews so you donโt have to: what guests love, and the one thing they complain about.
- Top Pick: Hotel Suitess, a private hotel right beside the Frauenkirche
- Good Value: Hotel am Schwanenhaus, a small, certified hotel on the Elbe with Old Town views
- Luxury: Relais & Chรขteaux Bรผlow Palais, a five-star retreat in the Barockviertel
- Classic: Gewandhaus Dresden, an 18th-century merchantsโ hall in the Old Town
- Where to Stay: the best areas of Dresden for each kind of trip
Hotel Suitess
Address: An der Frauenkirche 13, Dresden
Area: Altstadt (Neumarkt), a 6-minute walk to the Zwinger
Guest rating: 9.2/10 on Booking.com
Suitess is a privately run five-star hotel of 78 rooms and apartments set behind baroque facades on the Neumarkt, rebuilt true to the originals. It occupies part of an eight-building ensemble beside the Frauenkirche, including the pastel-coloured houses โZum Schwanโ and โZur Glockeโ, and the rooms are furnished in Biedermeier style. There is a spa with a hot tub and sauna, a fitness room and the hotelโs own restaurant, Moritz.
It tops this list for location as much as style. The Frauenkirche is a few steps from the door, the Royal Palace and the Zwinger are within a six-minute walk, and the Semperoper is about 700 metres away, so you can see the whole Old Town without a tram ticket.
Guests love: the location, which scores 9.8, the historic building and the attention to detail in its furniture and public areas, and comfortable beds paired with a breakfast reviewers rate highly.
Watch out for: some rooms have the shower over the bathtub, which a couple of reviewers found awkward, and others mention dated bathrooms or basic toiletries.

Hotel am Schwanenhaus
Address: Holzhofgasse 8, Dresden
Area: Neustadt, on the Elbe riverbank, a 14-minute walk to Albertplatz
Guest rating: 9.5/10 on Booking.com
Check Availability
This is a small hotel of 26 rooms, some with balconies, right on the Elbe between the Albert Bridge and the Waldschlรถsschen Bridge. Rooms are modern and bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows and walk-in showers, and some of them, along with the breakfast room, look across the river to the Old Town skyline. A large, park-like garden surrounds the house, and there is a cafรฉ and a bar on site.
The hotel is owned and run by a non-profit that is part of the Diakonissenanstalt, and people with and without disabilities work side by side in the team. It is the furthest of our picks from the Old Town: allow a tram ride or a longer walk along the river to reach the Frauenkirche, though the Elbe cycle path and a river ferry are right on the doorstep.
It has the highest score on this list, and guests consistently rave about the breakfast, the attentive staff and spotless, comfortable rooms, and at least one repeat guest says they stay nowhere else in Dresden. The recurring complaint is that extras add up, since breakfast and parking cost extra, and a few mention roadworks nearby. The hotel holds GreenSign Hotel Level 4 certification.
Relais & Chรขteaux Bรผlow Palais
Address: Kรถnigstraรe 14, Dresden
Area: Barockviertel, Innere Neustadt, a 15-minute walk to the Old Town
Guest rating: 9.2/10 on Booking.com
Check Availability
Bรผlow Palais is a Relais & Chรขteaux hotel of 58 rooms and suites on Kรถnigstraรe, the elegant main street of the baroque quarter north of the river. Rooms mix baroque and modern style, with fine fabrics, bright colours and rich wood tones. Breakfast is served in a light-filled conservatory, and there is a bar, a cigar lounge and Brasserie BENNO, which cooks with regional and seasonal produce.
The Palais Spa has a Finnish sauna, a bio sauna, a steam room and a gym, and the hotel has its own underground car park. Trams stop a few minutes away at Neustรคdter Markt and Albertplatz, and the Old Town is about 15 minutes on foot across the Augustus Bridge.
Reviewers single out the staff, the comfortable and spacious rooms, and the food at breakfast and in the restaurant, and many note that the historic centre is an easy walk away. The common gripe is cost: breakfast is expensive if it isnโt included, and a few guests mention flat or soft pillows.
Gewandhaus Dresden
Address: Ringstraรe 1, Dresden
Area: Altstadt, a 10-minute walk to the Frauenkirche
Guest rating: 9.0/10 on Booking.com
Check Availability
The Gewandhaus was built between 1768 and 1770 and is now a five-star boutique hotel with a modern-baroque interior. Rooms are in soft beige and light grey, some look onto the covered inner courtyard, and the junior suites have real marble bathrooms with whirlpool tubs and gold fittings. The spa is the surprise: blue and turquoise mosaics, real palm trees and life-like sculptures of a hippo and a dinosaur around the pool.
It sits on the edge of the Old Town, with the Pirnaischer Platz tram stop two minutes away and the Semperoper five minutes by tram. There is a restaurant and bar, and a cake atelier for coffee and homemade cakes, but no hotel car park.
Guests consistently praise the location for exploring the Old Town on foot, the well-designed rooms and the large indoor pool. The recurring complaint is air conditioning that struggles on hot days. Its value-for-money score (8.4) is the lowest of our picks, and Wi-Fi scores weaker too, with one reviewer annoyed at needing a Marriott account to log in.
Where to Stay in Dresden
Altstadt: the Old Town suits first-time visitors and short stays, with the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Royal Palace and the Semperoper all within a few minutes of each other. Hotel Suitess is on the Neumarkt itself, and Gewandhaus Dresden is on its eastern edge.
Barockviertel (Innere Neustadt): across the Augustus Bridge, this quarter of boutiques, galleries and museums on Kรถnigstraรe and the tree-lined Hauptstraรe suits couples and return visitors who want a calmer base. From the riverbank here you get the famous Canaletto view back over the Old Town. Bรผlow Palais is on Kรถnigstraรe, and Dresden-Neustadt station is about 800 metres away, handy if youโre carrying on to Berlin, where our Berlin boutique hotels are all in Mitte.
รuรere Neustadt: the cityโs alternative quarter suits younger travellers and anyone here for the bars and cafรฉs of Gรถrlitzer Straรe, the courtyards of the Kunsthofpassage and Pfunds Molkerei on Bautzner Straรe. None of our picks is in the thick of it, but Bรผlow Palais is a short walk away.
Elbe riverbank: east of the Neustadt, the river meadows suit cyclists and anyone who would trade a few minutes on the tram for views and quiet. Hotel am Schwanenhaus is here, with the Elbe cycle path at the door.
Sustainable Stays in Dresden
- Hotel am Schwanenhaus holds GreenSign Hotel Level 4, awarded after an on-site audit covering energy, water, waste, purchasing, regional sourcing and social responsibility.
- The same hotel is run as a non-profit social enterprise that trains and employs people with disabilities.
- The Elbe cycle path runs right past Hotel am Schwanenhaus, and the hotel hires out bikes, so you can ride along the river into the Old Town.
Next stop Prague? Itโs the classic pairing with Dresden, and most of our picks for boutique hotels in Prague are in the Lesser Town and the historic centre.
