The Spectator Hotel
Address: 67 State Street, Charleston, SC 29401
Area: French Quarter, under 4 minutesโ walk to the City Market
Guest rating: 9.4/10 on Booking.com
The Spectator leans fully into the Jazz Age, from its 1920s-inspired interiors to a speakeasy-style bar pouring Prohibition-era drinks. Its signature is service: every guest gets a personal butler, and breakfast of seasonal, locally sourced dishes is delivered to your room. It sits on the corner of State and Linguard Streets, one block from the City Market, with Waterfront Park and Rainbow Row an easy stroll away.
Guests love: the butlers and staff (rated 9.9 for staff), breakfast in bed every morning, and a location that puts the French Quarter on the doorstep.
Watch out for: the price, which is the most common grumble, and a few recent reports of bathrooms showing wear, such as mildew on the grout.
Sustainability: Green Key Global Eco-Rating.

French Quarter Inn
Address: 166 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401
Area: French Quarter, 450 m from Waterfront Park
Guest rating: 9.6/10 on Booking.com

This historic inn looks over the City Market on Market Street, with a lobby of velvet fabrics, magnolia carpet and trickling fountains. The day is built around small rituals: champagne at check-in, a free gourmet continental breakfast in the lobby, on the terrace or in your room, port wine and cheese in the evening, and milk and cookies at night. Rooms are vintage-inspired, and free bikes are on hand for exploring.
Guests single out the extras, the staff and how clean the rooms are (cleanliness scores 9.9). The trade-offs are no restaurant or pool, valet-only parking, and a breakfast spread some reviewers find a little limited.
The Pinch Charleston
Address: 40 George Street, Charleston, SC 29401
Area: Historic District, at King and George Streets, 4 minutesโ walk to Marion Square
Guest rating: 9.3/10 on Booking.com

The Pinch has just 22 rooms and suites spread across the 1869 Bob Ellis buildings on King Street, the 1843 Lequeux-Williams House and one new building, designed by Morris Adjmi Architects. Old clay, stone and wood meet a crisp, contemporary fit-out, and rooms come with kitchenettes and washing machines, so it feels more like a small apartment than a hotel room. Lowland restaurant fills two floors of the old house, and the courtyard has an outdoor fireplace.
Reviewers praise the design, the space and the spotless rooms (cleanliness and comfort both score 9.8). The recurring complaint is street noise in rooms facing the road, because the historic building keeps its single-pane windows; earplugs and white noise machines are provided.
The Vendue, Downtown Art Hotel
Address: 19 and 26 Vendue Range, Charleston, SC 29401
Area: French Quarter, under 5 minutesโ walk to Waterfront Park and the City Market
Guest rating: 9.2/10 on Booking.com

The Vendue fills two buildings dating from 1780 with more than 200 original artworks, rotating exhibitions and daily guided art tours. It came in cheapest of our hotel picks when we compared rates for a November weeknight, and a lot is included: morning coffee and pastries, an evening art reception with wine, milk and cookies at turndown, and free bikes. The Rooftop bar and Revival restaurant, serving elevated Southern and Lowcountry cooking, are on site.
Guests love the art in the lobby, halls and rooms, the free treats and the friendly staff. The most common complaint is that rooms are small, particularly in 19 Vendue, and a few guests noticed a musty smell.
Market Pavilion Hotel
Address: 225 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC 29401
Area: City Market, 3 minutesโ walk to the market and Waterfront Park
Guest rating: 9.2/10 on Booking.com
Check Availability
Market Pavilionโs big draw is the rooftop: the Pavilion Bar and its cascading pool look out over historic Charleston. Downstairs, Grill 225 is a steakhouse, and rooms have Italian marble bathrooms with a separate shower and bath. Some suites include access to a concierge parlour.
Reviewers rave about the pool and bar, the staff and the roomy bathrooms. The recurring gripes are that there is no sit-down breakfast (pastries and coffee are set out on each floor instead), and that some rooms look over a car park.
The Jasmine House
Address: 64 Hasell Street, Charleston, SC 29401
Area: Ansonborough, four blocks from the City Market
Guest rating: 9.3/10 on Booking.com
Check Availability
The Jasmine House is an 1843 Greek Revival mansion with 11 individually decorated rooms, and itโs adults only. Breakfast is delivered to your door each morning and thereโs a wine and cheese reception in the evening. Some rooms have a private patio or a gas fireplace.
Guests love breakfast in the room, the evening wine and cheese, and a quiet house that is still a short walk from everything. Watch for noisy air conditioning and heating units at night, and note that check-in and parking are across the street at the Indigo Inn.
Where to Stay in Charleston
French Quarter: the easiest base for a first visit, with the City Market, Waterfront Park and the harbour all a few minutes away on foot. The Spectator Hotel, French Quarter Inn, The Vendue and Market Pavilion Hotel are all here or on its edge.
Ansonborough: a residential grid of stately old townhouses east of King Street, quieter at night but still walkable to the market. The Jasmine House is here.
Upper King Street and Cannonborough-Elliotborough: for food and bar hopping, with restaurants and independent makers in repurposed industrial buildings along King, Cannon and Spring Streets. None of our picks is here, but The Pinch, at King and George Streets, is a short walk away.
South of Broad: antebellum townhouses and house museums on quiet, mostly residential streets, best for an evening stroll. Itโs an easy walk south from any of the French Quarter picks.
