Glasgow is one of my favourite cities in Britain for a short break, with its Victorian architecture, food and music scene and big green parks close to the centre. These boutique hotels in Glasgow suit couples and city breakers who want character instead of a chain room.

Two are in the city centre, one is in the leafy West End and one overlooks Kelvingrove Park, so you can choose between walking everywhere and a quieter base a short ride or walk from the action.

Native Glasgow

Native Glasgow fills the former headquarters of the Anchor Line shipping company, an Edwardian building from 1906 beside George Square. It has 64 apartments, from studios to penthouses, and the design takes its cue from a 1920s ocean liner, with glazed tiles, terrazzo floors, timber panelling and original fireplaces. A press review noted one apartment where an original steel vault now serves as a walk-in wardrobe.

Its Booking location score is 9.8, the highest of the four, and reviewers repeatedly mention how handy it is for Queen Street station and the airport bus. Guests also praise the roomy apartments, the friendly staff and the lack of street noise. The catch is that this is an aparthotel: there is no room service or spa and the kitchens are small, so it suits travellers who want space and a central base rather than hotel pampering.

One Devonshire Gardens a Hotel du Vin

One Devonshire Gardens is a B-listed terrace of Victorian townhouses built in the 1870s, and it has operated as a hotel since 1986. Now run as a Hotel du Vin, it has 49 individually styled rooms, an oak-panelled bistro and a whisky snug with more than 300 whiskies.

Booking guests rate the location 9.3 and the staff 9.5, and reviewers single out the big, comfortable rooms, the period features and the sense of staying somewhere special. The most common drawback is distance: it is about 3.5 km from the city centre, and the hotel has no lift, so ask for a ground-floor room if stairs are a problem. It holds Green Tourism certification.

The Alamo Guest House

The Alamo Guest House occupies a 19th-century Victorian building overlooking Kelvingrove Park. Its rooms are dressed with antique furnishings, and the hotel’s own site describes dark red walls and Harris Tweed fabrics in the hallway and tea room, and four-poster beds and freestanding baths in some rooms.

Guests give the staff 9.7 and the location 9.6, and reviewers mention the grand building, the quiet rooms and the complimentary breakfast. The city centre is about 20 minutes’ walk away and the SEC is a similar distance, and a few guests note that lower-level rooms have restricted views.

Kelvingrove: A good middle ground between the centre and the West End, with the park on your doorstep. The Alamo Guest House is here, and the walk to the SEC is about 20 minutes.
