3 Boutique Hotels in Heidelberg Either Side of the Neckar

Recommendations are based on personal travel experiences and research. If you book through links on our site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
โ€”

Heidelberg packs its castle, Old Bridge and university streets into a compact Old Town beside the Neckar, with the leafy district of Neuenheim facing it across the river. These boutique hotels in Heidelberg suit travellers who want a place with a story: a grand hotel run by the same family for four generations, a six-room villa and a small modern hotel on a market square.

Boutique Hotels in Heidelberg

Every hotel here is rated 9 or higher by Booking.com guests, is independently run with its own character, and sits either in the Old Town or across the river in Neuenheim, within walking distance of it. We read the reviews so you donโ€™t have to: what guests love, and the one thing they complain about.

  • Top Pick: Hotel Europรคischer Hof Heidelberg, a family-run grand hotel with a rooftop spa
  • Good Value: Rafaela Hotel Heidelberg, a modern small hotel on a Neuenheim market square
  • Classic Inn: Hotel Heidelberg Astoria, six rooms in a turn-of-the-century villa
  • Where to Stay: the Old Town, Neuenheim and Bergheim

Hotel Europรคischer Hof Heidelberg

Address: Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 1, Heidelberg
Area: western edge of the Old Town, about a 5-minute walk to the HauptstraรŸe
Guest rating: 9.4/10 on Booking.com

The Europรคischer Hof opened as an inn in 1865, and the family who bought it in 1906 still runs it: Dr Caroline von Kretschmann now leads it as the fourth generation. Itโ€™s bigger than most boutique hotels, with 116 individually designed rooms and suites, but it keeps the feel of a family house, and the hotel calls itself the cityโ€™s living room. Its Panorama Spa has a pool, sauna and rooftop terrace looking across to Heidelberg Castle.

Dining is a big part of a stay. Die Kurfรผrstenstube serves French fine dining from mid-September to mid-April, a summer restaurant moves into the inner courtyard for the warmer months, and evenings end in the Europa Bar or the Smokersโ€™ Lounge. At the top of the house, the Penthouse Suite covers 200 square metres above the rooftops.

Guests love: attentive, friendly staff (staff and comfort both score 9.7), owners who are visible to guests, spacious elegant rooms, and the rooftop terrace and spa with their castle view.

Watch out for: itโ€™s priced as a 5-star superior hotel, and value for money (8.7) is its lowest score; a few guests would like more vegan and gluten-free choice in the restaurant and bar.

Sustainability: GreenSign (Level 4).

Rafaela Hotel Heidelberg

Address: LutherstraรŸe 17, Heidelberg
Area: Neuenheim, within a 15-minute walk of the Old Town
Guest rating: 9.1/10 on Booking.com
Check Availability

Rafaela is a modern small hotel in a building finished in 2019, on a quiet side street in Neuenheim. Rooms have large high-comfort beds and a walk-in shower behind a glass door, with the bathroom half open to the room. A lounge doubles as a spot for co-working or a quiet coffee.

The setting is the draw: a small market square right outside the door has cafรฉs and restaurants with outdoor tables in summer, plus French, Italian and sustainable speciality shops, and Neuenheimโ€™s weekly market sets up there. Breakfast uses produce from the market and the baker next door. The Neckar bank is a 2-minute walk and the Philosophersโ€™ Walk about 5 minutes.

Guests rate the staff at 9.7 and keep mentioning the welcome, the bar vouchers for a drink on arrival, the breakfast and the good soundproofing. The common gripe is parking: thereโ€™s none at the hotel, so drivers use a public garage a few minutes away, and some rooms are compact, with little space for suitcases.

Hotel Heidelberg Astoria

Address: Rahmengasse 30, Heidelberg
Area: Neuenheim, 250 metres from the Neckar and about a 10-minute walk to Bismarckplatz
Guest rating: 9.0/10 on Booking.com
Check Availability

Astoria fills a villa from the turn of the 20th century, with just six rooms that pair modern comforts with traditional charm. Some rooms have a balcony over the garden, and the terrace is where breakfast is served in good weather. Guests can also keep food in a shared kitchen fridge and make hot drinks in the evening.

The house sits on a quiet cul-de-sac, set back from the street. Heidelberg Castle is about a 25-minute walk, and thereโ€™s electric car charging, though only a handful of parking spaces in the driveway.

Reviewers describe it as closer to a bed and breakfast than a hotel, and they love the hostโ€™s personal welcome (staff score 9.6), the regional breakfast with fresh orange juice and croissants, and the calm of the street. The recurring complaint is heat: the old building has no air-conditioning, so rooms get warm in summer, and the cheapest doubles have a narrower 1.40 metre bed.

Where to Stay in Heidelberg

Old Town (Altstadt): the choice for first-time visitors who want the castle, the Old Bridge and the HauptstraรŸe on foot. Our top pick, the Europรคischer Hof, is on its western edge, so you can walk into the lanes in minutes and come back to a spa at the end of the day.

Neuenheim: across the river from the Old Town at the foot of the Heiligenberg, with a village feel around its marketplace and green residential streets. It suits travellers who prefer a quieter base with local cafรฉs, and the Philosophersโ€™ Walk above it gives a sweeping view over Heidelberg before the Schlangenweg path drops down to the Old Bridge. Rafaela and Astoria are both here.

Bergheim: the district next to the Old Town that the city calls its second centre, home to the main station, the Prinzhorn Collection and the thermal swimming pool. It suits visitors arriving by train who want to stay close to the station, though none of our picks are here.
